Heavy Duty Hearing Aids For (Really) Active Adults

The next generation of hearing aid wearers wont be satisfied with delicate, easily-damaged devices. This is the generation that invented Ultimate Frisbee, rock climbing and line dancing, and no fragile hearing device one susceptible to water and debris damage is going to cut it with this crowd.

Thats why makers of quality hearing aids, at least those looking to their future consumers, are building rugged, water-resistant hearing devices that deliver top-notch performance and ease of use under demanding conditions.

102007_heavyaidman.jpgSiemens CENTRA Active’ is one good example of this new generation of hearing devices. This manufacturer of high-end hearing instruments has developed the AquaProtect System’ – multi-layered protection system that includes a GORE’ clip-on microphone cover that protects the microphone from all types of moisture, a nanocoated housing to prevent moisture from seeping into sensitive circuitry, and the easily replaceable C-Guard’ wax protection system to protect the devices receivers.

102007_heavydutyaid.jpgCENTRA Active, however, doesnt stop with increased durability. It also delivers the latest in automated functionality. Brande Barker, North American Product Requirements Manager for Siemens, described some of the convenient features of CENTRA Active, including the elimination of transient sounds. We call it SoundSmoothing’ because it eliminates annoying clicks and clanks, as well as other distracting impulsive noise from the environment while leaving the speech signal intact.

Another smart feature? If the wearer makes manual adjustments regularly, Barker explained, after a period of just days, the system learns the volume preferences of the user and makes the adjustments automatically when they turn on their instruments or switch to different programs.

One extremely popular, optional feature is Siemens ePocket’ a remote control that enables users to make adjustments easily and discreetly. The ePocket also provides useful information to the user including battery status (and CENTRA Active is even rechargeable), volume level and listening program settings all in a convenient, remote. Simple. The instruments do the thinking for the user who has more important things on his or her mind like climbing that next rock face.

102007_heavydutythree.jpgBarker was quick to point out that this device is not intended for most pediatric use, at least not for very young children. It can, however, be very appropriate for older kids and teens. Primarily, these instruments were designed for baby boomers who want to keep playing hard well into retirement.

Siemens CENTRA Active delivers the functionality, durability and convenience to do just that.

Rock on, boomers. The hearing aid industry is ready for you.
